Nasdaq, S&P, Dow eke out gains, helped by regional banks; SEC sues Coinbase

U.S. stocks on Tuesday seesawed through a muted trading session to end slightly higher, as investors took a bit of a breather on a relatively light news day with little on the economic data front. The Dow ( DJI ) ended as the worst performer, lagging behind Wall Street's other two major indexes. The blue-chip gauge rose 0.03% to settle at 33,573.28 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( COMP.IND ) added 0.36% to close at 13,276.42 points. Gains were capped by continued weakness in shares of Apple ( AAPL ) as investors digested the implications of the iPhone-maker's highly priced new mixed-reality headset. The S&P 500 ( SP500 ) ended 0.24% higher at 4,283.85 points. The benchmark index retreated further from a key level at 4,292.44 points, after having crossed it several times on Monday. If it closes above that level, it would mark a more than 20% gain from its October 2022 closing low and an exit from its longest bear-market run since 1948. Seven of the 11 S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by an outsized +1% gain in Financials on the back of strength in regional bank stocks. The SPDR Regional Bank ETF ( KRE ) and the Invesco KBW Regional Bank ETF ( KBWR ) added more than 5% each, while Comerica ( CMA ) and Zions Bancorporation ( ZION ) ended among the top S&P 500 ( SP500 ) percentage gainers. "With the debt ceiling deal and the OPEC meeting in the market's rearview mirror, we could be heading into a sleepy period this summer," Andrew Hecht, investing group leader of Hecht Commodity Report , told Seeking Alpha. The economic calendar was empty, and the Federal Reserve is in its blackout period ahead of its monetary policy committee meeting from June 13 to 14. According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets are seeing a solid ~81% chance of no rate hike next week, followed by a +54% probability of a 25 basis point bump in July. "The Fed is likely to pause interest rate hikes to allow the tightening to filter through the economy. However, the recent employment data does not preclude another 25 basis point Fed Funds Rate increase. While it is tempting to embrace calm conditions, traders and investors should remain vigilant as the geopolitical landscape continues to threaten surprises that could cause sudden price shocks," Hecht added. Also in focus on Tuesday were cryptocurrencies, after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued crypto exchange Coinbase ( COIN ), which tumbled more than 12%. Bitcoin ( BTC-USD ) and ethereum ( ETH-USD ) initially fell, but then reversed course and marched higher. Treasury yields were mixed. The longer-end 10-year yield ( US10Y ) was down 1 basis point to 3.68% while the more rate-sensitive 2-year yield ( US2Y ) was up 3 basis points to 4.51%. The dollar index ( DXY ) was up 0.15% to 104.16. Turning to active stocks, chipmakers were in focus after reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) revised its annual capital spending outlook. Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD ) and Intel ( INTC ) both jumped and were among the top percentage gainers on the Nasdaq Composite ( COMP.IND ).
